Reading Developing Through Pupppets

INTRODUCTION
Puppets are a fun medium for teaching different skills. The most commonly used form of teaching with puppets is using them with literature units. However, the versatility of puppets makes them useful when teaching manners, socialization, and other basic educational skills. Teaching with puppets requires creativity and quick thinking skills, but overall it requires the ability to engage in the story.

BENEFITS
Puppets get children's attention and hold their interest.
Children respond positively to puppets (in general, and particularly, shy children).
Puppets provide an outlet for children's creativity and self-expression.
Children remember the story or event when puppets are included.
Puppetry encourages language development and practice.

PROCEDURES
Step 1: Choose a book to read to the class
Step 2: Give a brief summary to the class
Step 3: Introduce the puppets/characters of the story
Step 4: Create voices for the puppets
Step 5: Design puppet area
Step 6: Read the book out loud while using puppets

AFTER THE STORY
  1. Place the students in groups (depending on characters in the story).
  2. Assign characters from the story to the students.
  3. Show students how to make paper bag puppets.
  4. Facilitate while students make their designated puppets.
  5. Let students create their own voices for their characters.

There are many types of puppets which can be used in reading. These are some of them....

BOTTLE PUPPETS
These puppets are used in reading a story book entitled An Honest Woodcutter. The puppets were made using plastic bottles as the main body and as you can see, the hair was made from spool. Click HERE for the story.

These puppets made by the students.

SOCK PUPPETS
This sock puppet was made by one of my students. It's in year 2 textbook. They used it to act out a story.
These socks puppets are used for reading stories from big books.

FINGER PUPPETS
Finger puppets shown here are used in rhymes: Mary Had A Little Lamb.

LOOM BAND PUPPETS
Loom Band puppets can also be used in reading stories. Create them based on the book that you are going to read.

If you'd like to know more about these puppets especially the loom band puppets, you may contact Teacher Rubinah Adnan @ 0165853603.

Pupils Creativity

I'd like to share some of my pupils' creativity. These were based on year 2 textbook.

Class: 2 Kenari
School: SK Pekan Bongawan, Papar Sabah

Theme: Occupations.
The pupils were proudly showing off their egg puppets. They made a small hole on the egg and took out its content. Then, they drew a face on a piece of paper, coloured it, cut it and pasted it on the egg. The lesson was about occupations: so they drew a policeman, a nurse, a teacher, etc. (What they want to be when they grow up). At the end of the lesson, they talked about their puppets.

Theme: Recycle.
These pupils used empty cans and clay (play dough) to make coins boxes. They pulled out the tab of the can and cleaned the can. Then, they rolled the clay and put it around the can.

LINUS Corner

These pupils spell correctly based on pictures given. The board is hung outside the classroom where various of activities will be provided on a daily basis. The pupils are free to complete the tasks given during recess  or while waiting for their teachers to come. There are many activities other than spelling. For example like grammar, writing, reading, etc.
